A Four-Minute Diagnostic To Help Work from The Inside Out

Issue 150- Jason Payne, CMPC

You know your team’s win-loss record from last season.

You can probably tell me who led your team in scoring, in rebounds, in assists.

You have scouting reports for every athlete you have ever coached, whether you kept them formally or in your head. The ones who improved or plateaued. The player you knew was going to become something more than the version who walked into your gym at the start of their career.

The one scorecard you have almost certainly never kept is the one for yourself.

Most coaches I have worked with have season plans that break everything down to the micro level. The restaurant they plan to stop at on a road trip six months from now has been planned. They even plan when they will install their 7th Baseline Out of Bound Set. (No judgement, they are my favourite!) They can produce a two-hour breakdown of their athletes’ development in any given season. Ask the same coach what they were like at the start of the season versus the midseason grind, and the answer is usually vague. A little tired. Not as sharp as I should have been. I don’t know, honestly, I was just trying to make it to spring break.

That is not in-depth analysis. That is a hope and a prayer.

Which is a problem, because the same coaches who don't know what their best looks and feels like are the ones most likely to reach burnout wondering how they got there. Coaches drift from the best version of themselves. We all do. The ones who catch it early are the ones who have a way of measuring where they stand. The ones who catch it too late are the ones who never slowed down enough to look inwards.

I have been thinking about this problem for years. Most of my consulting work with coaches begins with the same conversation. What does it look like when you're at your best? How close are you to that right now? And almost always, the answer I hear is I do not know.

So I built the tool that would have helped me avoid burnout a decade ago and helps coaches figure out where they stand.

The Aligned Coach Scorecard

Sixteen questions. Four minutes. Free.

The Scorecard measures four dimensions that, in my experience across twenty-five years of coaching and consulting, matter more than any tactical or technical skill you could name. When it gets hard, the answers to these four questions are what allow you to be remain at your best.

Identity. Who you are as a coach. What you stand for. What version of you shows up under pressure, and whether that version is the one you meant to be.

Purpose. Why you coach. Not the version you would give at a booster meeting. The one you know in February.

Impact. Who you are trying to serve, and what specific qualities you are trying to build in them. Not measured by wins.

Sustainability. How you keep doing this work across decades, not just seasons. Whether you have built the infrastructure underneath your caring, or whether you are running on grit alone.

When you complete the Scorecard, you get three things. An overall Alignment Score. A cornerstone-by-cornerstone breakdown showing where you are strongest and where you are drifting. And a personalized narrative that tells you what your specific pattern suggests about where the work is asking to begin.

You also get a PDF version emailed to you so you can hold onto it, print it, come back to it midseason, and compare it against where you were today.

There is nothing to buy. Nothing to sign up for beyond your email. Nothing to decide right now other than whether you want to know where you actually stand.

Most coaches I have worked with feel like it provides them language to describe what they are feeling but can't quite put their fingers on.

I finally have language for what I have been feeling.

That is what a diagnostic is for. Not to tell you what to do. To give you the words for what you have already been sensing.

Take Four Minutes This Week

The Scorecard lives here:

If you take it, do me one favour. Sit with the result for a day before you decide what it means. The scores are less important than the pattern, and the pattern is less important than the honest response it prompts in you.

If someone in your coaching life would benefit from the same reflection, forward this email to them. Or send them the link directly. Every coach I have talked to about it has thought of at least one other coach who needed it more than they did.

The Scorecard is a small piece of the framework in the book coming out October 27, but you do not need the book to get value from the Scorecard. The report is yours.

More soon.

Jason

P.S. If you take the Scorecard and something about the result surprises you, hit reply and tell me. I read every response. Sometimes the surprise is the diagnostic itself.

P.P.S. This is the end of my 150th issue. Thanks so much for reading over the last five and a half years. I could never have imagined that writing would have such an impact on my life. Thanks for coming along for the journey. I can't wait to see where the next 150 issues take me.

Quentin Something I've Been Writing For Six Years and Thinking About For Twenty-Five Issue 149- Jason Payne, CMPC Somewhere in the last twelve months, you have probably had this thought. Maybe it hit after a bad game that left you drained of energy like you had played instead of coached. Perhaps it arrived on a Sunday afternoon when you realized there was a part of you dreading practice on Monday. Or it was the exhaustion you felt in every cell of your body the day after your season...

Quentin The Version of You That Athletes See That You Don’t Issue 148- Jason Payne, CMPC Somewhere around my tenth or eleventh year of coaching, an athlete of mine told me something that was hard to hear, but true. Fortunately, it has shaped my coaching ever since. He was a senior. Our program was struggling that season. It was late February, and his career was winding down. We had a practice coming up in an hour. He was hanging around the office after his class, and casually he said that, as...

Quentin What You Can Borrow From the NFL to Keep Your Culture Alive During the Season's First 10 Days. Issue 147- Jason Payne, CMPC NFL training camps open this weekend. The football fan in me can't wait. However, I love summer and can't believe that we are already talking about football. The World Cup hasn't even ended yet. Regardless, the NFL season is inevitable, and by the end of next week, the culture of thirty-two football seasons will already be set. Not the schemes or the depth...
